China under President Xi Jinping is known to have been tightening information control over a variety of social dimensions, from civil society, international NGO to mass media, Internet, and the social media. The impact of the restrictions are gradually extended from political speech and call for action messages to seemingly less confrontational areas, such as entertainment and creative industries, business and commerce as well as the deployment of “social credit”. With the recent establishment of “Voice of China”, the Chinese government has been aggressively expanding its propaganda machine to further manipulate public opinion. This talk will give an update of the current situation, introduce the project Weiboscope/Wechatscope, and put forward the arguments why we have to investigate China’s information control strategies.
